The Nervous System for Kids
Polyvagal theory

Understanding The Nervous System

Our nervous system is part of every moment of our day, whether we're consciously aware of it or not. It influences how we respond to stress, connect with others, focus, learn, rest, play and navigate everyday experiences.

For children, learning to notice what is happening within their bodies can help build greater self-awareness. For adults, that same awareness can help us recognize our own responses while also understanding the important role we may play in co-regulation.

Awareness doesn't mean avoiding stress. It means learning to recognize what our body may be communicating and responding with greater intention.

A 5-Week Guided Workbook for Kids

Helping kids understand what they feel, notice what their bodies are communicating, and build greater self-awareness—one week at a time.

Learn about The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) For Your Nervous System

Enhance The State Of Your Nervous System Through SSP

At Ady & Co., we are a certified and trained provider in applying the Safe and Sound Protocol, an acoustic vagus nerve stimulator based on the Polyvagal Theory by Dr. Stephen Porges. Through this auditory program, we are able to help clients access a physiological state conducive to well-being, positive engagement with others, and growth in learning and any existing therapies that may already be in place for your child.

SSP is offered to Parents, Caregivers & Children. Parents, keep in mind your child will only be as regulated as your nervous system allows them to be.

Contact us to schedule a consultation to see if SSP is right for your child or your family. We will discuss the plan of action and pricing (Individual or Family Plan) and work together remotely through this journey to restore balance and deeper bonding within your family. The instructions for your protocol will be provided upon completion of the initial assessment.

Trauma and the Nervous System: A Polyvagal Perspective

the science behind ssp

Repatterning The Neural Networks

Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges and informed by Polyvagal Theory, SSP uses specially filtered music designed to emphasize frequencies associated with the human voice.

Listening is delivered gradually and paced according to the individual. The goal is not to force the nervous system into a particular state, but to provide an auditory experience designed to support regulation, connection and greater flexibility in responding to the environment.

It allows for the repatterning of neural networks and enhanced regulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) for lasting change.

#1

SSP interrupts chronic states of nervous system defense by stimulating the neural networks associated with listening.

#2

Algorithmically filtered music focuses on the frequency range of the human voice that alters the ways sounds are interpreted.

#3

Ushering the nervous system out of a defensive (fight, flight, or freeze) state and into a socially engaged (ventral vagal) state of safety and calm.

The polyvagal ladder

Adapted from the work of Dr. Stephen Porges and Deb Dana.

The Polyvagal Ladder is used as a guide to understanding better what is happening within the body—a healthy nervous system shifts between these states. The key is to learn to be aware of these states and how you react to them.

how it works

HOW SSP WORKS

SSP Core includes approximately 5 hours of specially filtered music. Listening is not completed all at once. Instead, it is divided into personalized increments and paced gradually according to the listener's individual experience.

Participants receive 3 months of program access, allowing time for thoughtful pacing, check-ins and adjustments as needed. Listening is conveniently accessed through an app, allowing SSP to fit into everyday life wherever you are.

FOR CHILDREN, TEENS & ADULTS

SSP can be used across ages and stages of life. Children may participate individually, while parents and caregivers may also choose to participate themselves.

For families, this can be particularly meaningful because regulation doesn't happen in isolation. The adults around a child are an important part of connection and co-regulation.

AREAS SSP MAY SUPPORT

SSP is designed to support nervous system regulation and greater flexibility in responding to everyday experiences. Areas of support may include emotional regulation, sensory experiences, attention and engagement, social connection, resilience, rest and relaxation.
